Conveyor Types And Their Functions

Every manufacturing facility solely depends on conveyor systems to improve efficiency through the fast movement of goods and products. Conveyors are simple machines that mainly consist of a long belt placed between pulleys and used to move bulky goods from point A to point B at once making it the main tool of trade for manufacturers. They effectively facilitate the movement of raw materials, finished products, harvest in farms, rocks in mining, luggage in airports, to just about anything in factories. Just like any other machine, conveyor systems have evolved to fully automated systems owed to the technological advances made through recent years.

Using conveyors can have numerous benefits with the top most being improved efficiency translating to reduction of operational costs. Besides this, they are much faster compared to using other known means of transport and much safer for both goods and employees at large. Some even have additional functions such as vibrations designed to shake up accumulated dust and dirt. Since their invention several years ago, different types of conveyors have been designed for different uses. Here are some of the most common types of conveyors and technology.

Passive Conveyor Technology

This technology was designed to facilitate the movement of goods without having to use electricity or energy. A good example of such a conveyor is the roller conveyors which solely depends on outside forces such as gravity to transport goods. It has rollers fixed on the conveyor bed similar to a ladder only that the rollers are much closer to each other. This technology is common in simple applications such as truck loading where goods only need to be placed on the roller and given a little push to slide down the conveyor.

Live Roller Conveyor

Consisting of large rollers lying on the conveyor bed, live roller conveyors are among the most popular types of machines cutting across all sectors of manufacturing. They are made from heavy metals and durable components making them ideal for the transportation of bulky goods and other rough applications such as mining. Powering these systems however, is not much demanding and only a decent amount of electricity and very low maintenance is required. Live roller conveyors can however be custom made in regards to the size and length of the belt depending on the manufacturer.

Accumulation Conveyor Technology

Recent technological advances have seen the evolution of almost every machine there is and conveyors are no different. Accumulation systems are the definition of modern conveyor systems with numerous censors placed all round to facilitate different automation functions. So modernized are these systems, that human intervention is not required for any application even starting and stopping which are commanded by the sensors.

There are numerous other types of conveyors besides the few mentioned above that have been designed to fulfill different functions. Conveyor systems are versatile and can be easily disassembled, or fixed to navigate corners among other capabilities. Therefore, finding the right conveyor system for your business begins by identifying the needs of your business and finding the right supplier/manufacturer to meet these needs. Take time in doing some research on the varieties and capabilities as factors such as performance, cost and design vary greatly in these machines.
