San Mauro Castelverde is a little village among the mountain, which, thanks to its inhabitants character, have been able to not remain an isolated eagle's aerie. History
San Mauro Castelverde was probably found in the VIII or VI century. Tradition tells that Santa Maria dei Tracchi Church, well known as Virgin Mary, was visited by Saint Gregor the Great, who left on a rock its “print”(the rock is still preserved in the church). Tradition tells also that from a parchment, found in San Mauro Castle, come out that Pietro Verde, a feudal noble of Charlemagne period landed in Sicily in 781, at the mouths of river Pollina, directed his steps towards the city of Calandra, dominated by Byzantine. There, in 788, Pietro Verde made built a castle, which took his name, Castle Verde. From the castle name derives the second name of the town, while the first (San Mauro) derives from the name of the saint death during the VI century. Under Normans, and above all under Ruggero II, San Mauro made part of Cefalù diocese, and in that period it was built San Mauro Castle by countess Guerrera order.

From XIV to XVIII San Mauro was dominated by Ventimiglia family. During this period was built San Mauro Abate Church. Under this church recently have been discovered ruins of ancient churchs, such as San Giovanni Church , San Mauro Church and San Vito Church.
